Kingston, 8 May 2018 - After six rounds of grueling arguments for and against, Munro College emerged winners of the 2018 Burger King National Secondary Schools Debate Competition. Over 60 schools participated in the competition leading up to the nail-biting final between Mannings High School and the Munro College.
The teams presented either for “The Government” or “The Opposition” on the moot “This House prefers the implementation of social intervention strategies as opposed to the Declaration of States of Emergencies in high crime areas”.
Munro, representing “The Opposition” successfully presented strong arguments in favour of the Zones of Special Operation (ZOSO), presenting charts to bolster their claim that these targetted security and community development measures are critical to reducing crime. Once success is achieved there, they said, social intervention programmes could be implemented and would have a greater rate of success.
The island-wide competition saw eight teams making it to the quarter finals and vying for $900,000 in cash and prizes. They were Munro College, Mannings High School, Cedar Grove Academy, Merl Grove High School, Ascot High School, York Castle High School, Meadowbrook High School and Manchester High School.
The annual competition has been lauded by the participants for honing their argumentative, writing, research and critical thinking skills and assisting in their preparation for CSEC and CAPE examinations.
