Dollars and sense

Mickella Anderson, Youthlink Writer

In this section, I appraise, in dollar value, things that do and do not make sense. If an issue is of great importance to me, I will give it a value of $1,000. Every subsequent issue will be given a reduced dollar value to reflect its decreasing significance to me.

$1,000 - Teachers and tattoos

Recently, Education Minister Ruel Reid warned that school administrators are to be mindful of the teachers they hire and, in so doing, check for tattoos and other such vulgarities. Apparently, many people were not pleased with the comment and felt that Reid had gone too far. Personally, there is no issue here, and I think it's about time some level of scrutiny is shown at the other end of the classroom. Some students' attire is restricted, down to their undergarments (and I do mean undergarments!), so the men and women who enforce these restrictions should, at least, set a standard to aim for.

$500 - And another one

Newly crowned sprint queen Elaine Thompson is soaking up all of her post-Olympics glory and has copped the 200m title at the recently concluded Diamond League ahead of a star-studded field. Elaine, chil', you are going places and going fast (pun intended)! Congrats, and continue to put our little island on the map just how you know best. #youngandgettingit

$100 - And it begins

In the words of Dutty Berry, box cova! Amid a swirl of accusations, wild photos and hints of infidelity that dominated social media a few weeks back, it appears Usain Bolt and girlfriend Kasi Bennett are in a good place once more. The two shared 'hotter than you and I will ever be' photos of their vacation in Bora Bora looking quite comfy together. Yup, this is what we get for sleuthing in people's relationship drama. Let's just let these two to be themselves; they know what the arrangement is between them and, right now, I'm about a minute away from a migraine.

$50 - These Instagram models

Who said being on your phone and maintaining a social-media presence doesn't pay off? Guys, as lightly as we may take it, social media can actually make or break you. It's accessible, inexpensive and popular. Every company wants to build an online presence. That's why some girls our age are cashing in through promotions or endorsements while some of us are yet to perfect the art of selfie taking. I'm not saying to go get outrageous for the 'gram. I'm just saying be mindful that the image you portray online might help you get those coins.
